Flares: how do they impact patients' daily life?
FLARES AMONG PATIENTS WITH PSORIATIC ARTHRITIS (PSA)-FREQUENCY AND IMPACT ON PATIENT OUTCOMES: REAL-WORLD SURVEY IN THE US AND EUROPE
Abstract: 0326
Authors: Ana-Maria Orbai et al.
Key content:
A cross-sectional survey was performed among 2238 patients with PsA (recruited by derma-tologists and rheumatologists) in 5 European countries (n = 1652) and the US (n = 586). Patients reported a mean of 2.2 flares in the last 12 months lasting a mean duration of 16.4 days. One third of patients in the survey were either currently in a flare or had flared in the last 12 months. Patients with flares were less likely to work full-time (43.6% versus 59.3%, p< 0.01). Patients who reported being currently in a flare had more pain, impaired functionality and quality of life as well as reduced work productivity. Patients with any skin involvement or enthesitis at diagnosis had a greater risk of flare.
Relevance:
This survey from several European countries and the US demonstrates that flares are frequent in PsA and have a significant impact on patient-reported outcomes and on the working capacities-this underlines the importance of achieving longterm disease control. Enthesitis and skin involvement at diagnosis were predictive of subsequently developing flares. Not surprisingly, patients who were prescribed a biologic, had a significantly lower risk of flares.
