Key content:
Sick leave has been poorly studied in axSpA. In this study 704 patients in the French DESIR cohort have been included with a follow up of up to 5 years. Incidence and time to first sick leave and its predictors were analyzed. At baseline 80% were employed. The incidence of sick leave was 0.05 per 1000 days of follow up. The mean time to first sick leave was 806 days. In the multivariate analysis male gender and higher education was associated with a lower hazard of sick leave, while higher disease activity, older age, smoking and use of TNFi were associated with a higher hazard.
Relevance:
In this young (mean age 33 years) early axSpA patient population, besides disease parameters such as high disease activity, socioeconomic factors were clearly associated with adverse work outcomes. This needs to be considered for the development of strategies to prevent loss of workability in axSpA patients.
